The text, a non-liturgical rhymed litany to the Blessed Virgin, is a simple, joyful and poetic invocation. Settings of Marian texts comprise a significant portion of Gombert’s output and, as this motet shows, the composer brings a seemingly effortless, yet inexhaustible, display of musical invention and expressiveness to this appealing prayer.
