Liturgical Use: |
Communion; Feasts of the Blessed Sacrament |
Remarks: |
Palestrina’s setting of this hymn to the Blessed Sacrament possesses an otherworldly serenity coupled with a sensuousness not too dissimilar in effect, though achieved with very different means, from French composer Messiæn’s celebrated setting of this same hymn from the early 20th century. The change from the
flowing counterpoint of the opening pages to slower,
more sustained music at the words "passionis
ejus" is
particularly striking. |
