Remarks: |
This setting of a gregorian antiphon
for the Nativity is the kind of compositional tour-de-force
for which Mouton was much admired
in his day – a
lush sonic tapestry is created by the serenely unfolding
strands
of a quadruple canon.
In the principal sources, there are only 4 notated voices (Choir II in this edition); performers were meant to realize the 4 unnotated canonic parts (Choir I) by following clues in the manuscript.
This edition includes as a prelude to the motet the very beautiful plainsong tune on which the motet is based; it is not readily available in modern chantbooks.
